Can you reproduce it with the following setting?

  % ls -d $GCC_SOURCE/gcc/java $GCC_SOURCE/libjava/
  ls: /sw/test/gcc/cvs-ts/gcc/java: No such file or directory
  /sw/test/gcc/cvs-ts/libjava/

That is, with gcc/java/ _not_ being present, but libjava/ being there?
