srcdir == objdir build issues [SC take note]

Hi,

for the record gcc 3.3 prerelease seems to have some
issues with this. So it would be very nice if a
consensus is reached before the next wave of bug
reports comes. Thanks.

P.S. Here's log of a build on sparc-sun-solaris2.8
with the latest 3.3 prerelease:
