building non-FPU cross-compiler for ARM

I tried to build a gcc-3.3 for an "arm-elf" target with binutils-2.13.1 and 
newlib-1.11.0, each configured with "--nfp" on a x86-host. Though, when 
compiling a program with "-msoft-float" gcc complains:

File format not recognized: failed to merge target specific data of file 
libc.a( [...various...] )
/arm-elf/bin/ld: ERROR: libgcc.a( [...various...] ) uses hardware FP, whereas 
[...] uses software FP

Does someone know this effect and what can I do?
