I don't think this is a serious regression. True, it increases code size, but 
it does not limit gcc's functionality at all. There are significantly more 
important bugs to be fixed at present.

Besides: for the optimization stated in this PR, gcc needs to be able to 
assign multiple symbols with the same address (two differently mangled names 
to the same function). Does gcc have this capability?
