When we run updates we hit disk write errors (no easy
fix since some of the 100 odd old drives have filled their
alternate map tables)

Yes, I think you should for now.

The good news is a new dual server system is built
and once the latest patches are applied and tested,
we will switch over.

Its taken a bit longer than I ever expected,
but probably be during July.
