I am sure it was earlier than 1987.  83-84 sounds about right.

Now that you mention it, I think that gcc (not capitalized, IIRC) was 
how you invoked it on
some systems, at least, in the mid-80s timeframe, although I had 
forgotten about it.
This name doesn't seem to appear  on their website now (not that I 
checked every link).
