 How is that? On modern platforms, the time spent by as + ld is negligible
when compared with cc1. How come the same proportion doesn't hold for slower
machines?

 Could it be a C library issue? I expect as and ld to be making much more I/O
than gcc, therefore inefficient libc or syscalls would make them crawl.
