Let's backport speedups from 3.4 to 3.3

Oh, yes, that needs to be protected or removed, I'll do this, it'll be  
in my next rev.  In the mean time, #if 0 it and you can continue.   
Those actually speed up the routine by 23%, so I do want to keep them  
in there in some form.
