CVS login hangs

I try to login to CVS as follows

    u2:eh? export CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/gcc
    u2:eh? cvs login                                                      
    (Logging in to anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org)
    CVS password:
    cvs [login aborted]: connect to subversions.gnu.org:2401 failed:
    Connection timed out
    u2:eh?



The web page at http://gcc.gnu.org/cvs.html says

In case of problems with the repository at subversions.gnu.org please 
contact savannah-hackers@gnu.org.

Any ideas?
