still problem with solaris8 --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld

OK, I configured like this:

../../gcc-3.3.1/configure --prefix=/home/nbecker/gcc --with-gnu-as 
--with-as=/usr/local/gnu/bin/as --with-gnu-ld --with-ld=/usr/local/gnu/bin/ld 
&& make

It got much further, but eventually:
checking whether the C compiler (/user/nbecker/sun/gcc-3.3.1/gcc/xgcc 
-B/user/nbecker/sun/gcc-3.3.1/gcc/ 
-B/home/nbecker/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/bin/ 
-B/home/nbecker/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/lib/ -isystem 
/home/nbecker/gcc/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/include  -m64 -O2 -g -O2 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot 
create executables.
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `configure-target-libiberty'

Any ideas?

Does configure && make still work for gcc3.3.1?  I don't maybe need to make 
stage1, stage2...?
