Why does -pedantic make long long an error in C++?

That's my reading of the documentation. To get an error, you would
need to use -pedantic-errors or add -Werror. I also believe the warning
should be an error if -ansi or -std=c++98 is used because the code
uses a feature that's not in the ISO standard.
