Between 3.3 and 3.3.1 this was "prerelease", and the ChangeLog reads:

2003-08-07  Mark Mitchell  <mark@codesourcery.com>

        * version.c (version_string): Reset to prerelease.
        * doc/include/gcc-common.texi: Update version.
