How well does gcc support cross compile?

What I found Friday is that multilibs won't build when
you use a symlink-tree to join gcc and binutils / gdb
sources - you have to have a plain directory tree for
the multilibs to be built - otherwise, you only get a
single set of libraries for the defaul options.
That is, at least for newlib this is the case.
