Perhaps, but there's nothing more annoying than trying to read a 
post
that goes like this and then this and so on.  And we really do need 
to
see whare a command line goes.

Besides, if you do have overlong lines it's trivial to wrap them.
OTOH, it can be somewhere between very hard and impossible to
accurately reconstruct a makefile that's been broken in a few places.

I have used tools that broke compiler command lines and it was
intensely annoying.  I can't remember if I was ever bitten by this
with GNATS, to be honest.
