upgrading fromm old gcc (newbie Q)

No. No. No.

Follow the instruction in http://gcc.gnu.org/install/ and, unless you are
completely confident, do _not_ replace /usr/bin/gcc but install the new
version into a directory of its own (/sw/gcc-3.2.1 or similar).
