    A real shame that the older mails got lost, 
    I wonder if the FSF would be willing to make the older archives
    available?

It didn't "get lost", it's that it's not public.  Making it public
would require the permission of all the contributors to the mailing
list, something that's very impractical to obtain.

I strongly doubt the FSF even *has* an archive of the messages.  If *anybody*
does, it would be Cygnus, but I'm not even sure they do.
