subversions anoncvs broken

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@gcc.gnu.org:/cvs/gcc up

works just fine, but 

cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/gcc up

has serious problems:

cvs server: Updating .
U ChangeLog
U Makefile
Terminated with fatal signal 11

A fresh checkout does not work either:

$ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/gcc co gcc
cvs server: Updating gcc
U gcc/.cvsignore
U gcc/COPYING
U gcc/COPYING.LIB
U gcc/ChangeLog
U gcc/MAINTAINERS
U gcc/Makefile
Terminated with fatal signal 11

I don't think this problem is on my side, unless it's a bug in CVS.
