on GNU/Linux, it uses the GNU C Library (<http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/>)
on Windows, with cygwin (a POSIX/unix emulation layer) it uses newlib
(<http://sources.redhat.com/newlib/>)
on Windows, with MinGW, it uses the Microsoft C libraries (see
<http://www.migw.org> for more info)
on DJGPP, it uses its own C library, written specifically for DJGPP itself.
on many other OSes / embedded systems, it usually uses either of the first
two, or the system standard C libraries.
