Not exporting symbols when enabling DSO for Apache (1.3.26) using gcc (2.95.3 and 3.0.3) on Soalris 8 - NOTE gcc (3.1) does build correctl y.

All,
 I just thought I would share this information and hopefully it can make it
to a FAQ list for others.  I have been fighting this off and on for two
weeks.  Reading tons of documents and all stating the same thing for
building Apache with DSO enabled (and ssl).  The only way that I could get
it to export the symbols with gcc (2.95.3 or 3.0.3) on Solaris 8 was with
the -enable-rule=SHARED_CORE.  When I removed the older version of gcc and
installed version 3.1 everything worked as documented.  IT looks like either
gcc or Solaris 8 was not playing well together until version 3.1.  It could
also be the "assumptions" in the Apache code but I am not sure.

Either way, I wanted to share this so others would not have to go through
the same trouble.

My build

Solaris 8 (sparc)
Gcc 3.1
Apache 1.3.26 (EAPI and DSO enabled)
Mod_ssl-2.8.10-1.3.26
Openssl-0.9.6d
mm-1.1.3

The reason for all the effort was I need to upgrade the version of Apache
and the previous build documentation did not include the version of Solaris.
This was indeed a "fun" exercise.

Please share on you sites FAQ as you see fit and if anyone has some detailed
thoughts on "why" I would be interested.  I do not have much more time to
get this project out so it will be on the back burned for a while.
