Problem bootstrapping on hp-ux (configure bug?)

I've been trying to bootstrap gcc-3.1 on hp-ux. I am using a separate
work directory, yet I getting the following error:

> checking for object suffix... configure: error: installation or
> configuration problem; compiler does not work
> gmake[1]: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1
> gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ss467/gcc/gcc-work'
> gmake: *** [bootstrap4] Error 2

Looking at the file hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00/libstdc++-v3/config.log I see
the following errors:

> configure:2143: /home/ss467/gcc/gcc-work/gcc/xgcc
> -B/home/ss467/gcc/gcc-work/gcc/
> -B/home/ss467/gcc3/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00/bin/
> -B/home/ss467/gcc3/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00/lib/ -isystem
> /home/ss467/gcc3/hppa2.0w-hp-hpux11.00/include -c -Ae conftest.c 1>&5
> <command line>:1:2: missing '(' after predicate

A google search for "checking for object suffix... configure: error:
installation or configuration problem; compiler does not work" reveals
that there was a bug introduced with 3.0.1 that broke configure.

http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-prs/2001-10/msg00056.html

I don't know configure at all, so I don't have any hope of fixing this.
Does anyone have any insight into what's causing this?

Thanks in advance.
