gcc 3.1 installation

Thanks for your help Jeff,

I did not specify the --prefix variable. I did set the srcdir and objdir in
the configure file prior to running ./configure. srcdir=/usr/lib/gcc-3.1,
objdir=/usr/lib/gcc3.1-lib.  This is all I configured away from the default.

The reason for doing this was a program called mplayer would not build cause
it did not like gcc2.96. It said i needed 2.95,3.x gcc compilers. Does 2.96
have problems?  We had to do the same at the office when trying to compile
an app.

I will check /usr/local/bin/gcc,  but what am I looking for?

How do I get the system to recognise it has another compiler to look for?  I
am assuming since the gcc -v reports 2.96, this must driven by something,
not just the gcc script itself. It will either be looking up a file or a
system file for this.  Or am completely off track here.
