CVS and gcc trees

I've grabbed gcc-20020211, imported it into CVS so I can track my
changes, and I've noticed that its sub-directory names contain
invalid characters that causes cvs to bomb out:

cvs edit sys_cstdlib.h
cvs [edit aborted]: current directory (/home/pbarada/work/cvs-wavemark/gnu-tools/gcc-20020211/libstdc++-v3/include/c) contains an invalid character (+,>;=\t\n)

Note the '+' in libstdc++v3.  How does the gcc cvs repository get
around this limitation of cvs?  I've looked at the latest cvs source
(1.11.1p1) and in src/edit.c it explicitely checks for '+'.
