complex arithmetic in C

Hello!
As of today, is it possible to do operations on complex numbers just like 
real numbers in C , without having to use the library of Complex arithmetic functions 
like C_add etc. as  in  file "complex.c" in Numerical recipes.
Does gcc support it and is there a reference online for  the declaration 
of complex variable and the function calls for complex arithmetic.
