Yes.  And if we introduce a third, there will be significant
inertia for there to _remain_ three implementations.

Did I say that?  I don't think I did.  If replacing the bitmap
implementation requires changes elsewhere wrt memory management,
then it should be possible to make those changes elsewhere before
actually replacing the bitmap implementation.

There are, unfortunately, only 24 hours in a day.

If I think I'd rather see the patch function in a completely
different way, I'll stop looking at it.  If you'd said "Ok, but
what do you think about the guts of the implementation?" I'd
have gone back and looked at it.  But otherwise I was planning
to wait until the next patch.
