I've seen this problem on an arm-riscos port that I maintain
for gcc versions 2.95.2 and 2.95.4.  And yes the problem does disappear
when optimisation is turned off.

I have a 100K piece of pre-processed C source code that will reliably
trigger this, if anybody wants it.
