Frame Allocation !!!

hi,

i'm newbie to GCC. i'm trying to understand the stack
layout and frame allocation. i pointed out one common
scheme among various ports:

when allocating frame in the prologue the size is
being rounded to the multiple of the WORD_SIZE even
though the machine does not have any alignment
requirements. (the minimum frame gets allocated is
that of the WORD_SIZE on many ports). does it got
anything to do with the performance, even though the
machine supports byte addressing ?

    i'm slightly confused ! ! ! !

can somebody point me in the right direction.

any help would be highly appreciated.

thanx and regards,
antony selvam.
