GCC 3.0 will not build on a Red Hat 6.0  system.  I get the error:
  
  as: unrecognized option `-no-mdebug'

Apparently, this is GAS 2.9.1.

The documentation says:

  We strongly recommend to upgrade to binutils 2.10 (or newer).

  The following error:
  @example
    Error: macro requires $at register while noat in effect
  @end example

Should that be changed to 

  You must install binutils 2.10 (or newer) to build GCC.
