Alignment in bits or bytes?

Hi,

Does anyone know if alignment in the gcc source code is generally expressed
in bits or bytes?  Specifically, they seem to be mixed up in the branch
version of expr.c.  I was going over this because some regressions in the
h8300 port looked relevant to this area.
