PR 2702

  Would you mind taking a look at PR2702 and David's proposed fix?
(Apparently, the bug has something to do with one of your patches from
a while back.)  

  This is a regression from GCC 2.95.2, so it's important.

  David's patch looks pretty reasonable to me, so if I don't hear from
you in a few days, I'll apply the patch.
