g77 Build Problems

That does not conform to the GNU coding standards, which say that
configure should support building with the sources in `.':

 |    If the user does not specify `--srcdir', then configure should check
 |    both `.' and `..' to see if it can find the sources. If it finds the
 |    sources in one of these places, it should use them from there.

What's the rationale for not following the GNU coding standards here?
