AIX status?

There were some discussion about AIX stuff here a couple of days ago
which ended without resulution.  I've been trying to get the gcc CVS
with V3 libstdc++ working on AIX 4.3.3, but I failed so far.  I was
able to bootstrap gcc with Mark Mitchell's patch first, but I got link
errors when I tried to link any C++ programs using libstdc++.  The AIX
ar cannot list the libstdc++.a file.  I tried configuring with
--disable-shard, that did not work either.  I tried installing GNU
binutils, but then the bootstrap failed with aix64 being an unknown
bdf target for as.  Does gas supports aix64?  I would need 64-bit, but
I can live without it, so I may try next to disable 64-bit.  But from
the list it seems that some people actually got it working on AIX, can
someone post how he did it?  I do not know much about gcc, but I do
have some experience with AIX dynamic linking, is there a way I can
help to get this working?  I have access to latest and fastest 64-bit
rs6k boxes running AIX 4.3, so I can do testing if needed.
