AIX vtable issues

Oops.  I already checked in my patch.  Byzantine agreement problem.

I think that my patch works along the lines of what you suggested, and
it does seem to work, so that's good empirical evidence. 

If you think it's wrong, though, go ahead and back it out, by all
means.
