Unrecognized option `-instances=static'

I installed the 2001-01-22 snapshot of gcc and tried to compile the Xerces-C++ 1.3 XML parser. After the configuration I get the following message:

g++ -fpic -instances=static -DLINUX -D_REENTRANT -c -g -DXML_USE_NATIVE_TRANSCODER -DXML_USE_INMEM_MESSAGELOADER    -I/disk2/source/xerces-c-src1.3.0/include  -o /disk2/source/xerces-c-src1.3.0/obj/LINUX/sax2Dummy.o sax2Dummy.cpp
cc1plus: Unrecognized option `-instances=static'
gmake[1]: *** [sax2Dummy.o] Error 1

What compiler option should I use instead?
