x86 bootstrap failure

It's especially disconcerting in this case because I *did* test on
multiple architectures, and in fact chose them such that there was
one that does support doloop (ia64) and one that does not (alpha).

I'm not sure what else can be expected except fixing unexpected
problems quickly when they arise.
