FYI I saw this today, but on Solaris 8.  The failing source line is

        sethi   %hi(_GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_-(.LL306-.)), %o0

I'm not so sure this is a problem with as.  Compiling the same source file
at -O0 works.
