confusion about RTL

hello,

 After reading some of the gcc manuals I conclude that
syntax trees are machine independent while RTL is
machine dependent. Some documents also suggest that
RTL is machine independent. Is that true?
 This is important because a conflict arises in
deciding whether to use RTL or tress for your own
designed backend. please clear out this confusion
