Can gcj cross compile C / C++ programs into java byte code?

Hi!

I've read the FAQ at " http://gcc.gnu.org/java/faq.html" ;, but the 
question isn't answered there.  Can gcj cross compile C / C++ programs 
into java byte code?  Why (not)?
