Status of GCC-2.96-RH

Hello,

The new release of RedHat Linux (7.1) comes with GCC-2.96-RH and
GLIBC-2.2.2, I was browsing the FSF GCC page and found that there
isn't a stable version named 2.96-RH, the latest stable version is 2.95.3.
What is the status of GCC-2.96-RH? Does that imply a possible incompatibility
between programs compiled with the 2.95.3 release and those compiled
with 2.96-RH?
