Making libg2c a shared library?

I have several Fortran programs and since there is no shared version
of libg2c, these programs consume large amounts of disk space. I
recall that I was possible to build a shared version of libf2c on linux, which
worked without a problem, some years ago.  

Therefore, I like to know why there is no shared version of libg2c? Are there
severe problems to overcome (global variables, etc.), or is that 
because of the lack of a volunteer?
