I need help about the program flow and overall architehture of gcc

Hi:

I am a master student who is working on a project of
gcc. We are trying to change some source codes of gcc.
What I need to know is how gcc works and what will
be the program flow or the overall architecture.
I really need some detailed documents of gcc but not
user manual.

Also, after revising some source codes of gcc,
how could I make it to test the revised gcc?
Just use the original makefile? Or use another gcc
to compile the revised source codes of gcc?
I really get some confusion.
