No, I had not built the kernel with the new compiler.
I certainly agree that this is due to a bug in the kernel,
which should not panic no matter what user code does. The
behavior is uncovered by a change in recent GCC snapshots.
Since I sent the first message about it neither machine has
had problems, and I've been running GCC tests just waiting
to see it again so I can show it to a local kernel developer.
