Building CVS on alpha-dec-osf4.0d

I can confirm the problem.  I've got access to two different alpha
machines, both running DU 4.0f.  One of them is recognized as an
alphaev6, the other as alphaev56.  The problem only shows up on the
alphaev56 one.
