unintended usage of gcc-2.96

I would prefer `gcc --version` to print
  gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)
or
  gcc version 2.97 20001008 (experimental)
instead of the current output
  2.95.2
or
  2.97

But that's just me. Are there any reasons *not* to make such a change?
