Preproccessor not accepting '\' for multiline directives!

Hi,

I have attempted to use the latest STL from SGI (version 3.3) with gcc, but
the preprocessor keeps reporting illegal tokens in some of the include files
(stl_config.h and stl_range_errors.h) on the lines ending with a '\' to allow
for continuation on the next physical line.  If I remove these tokens and make
the line very long (and messy looking) the errors clear up, so it does seem
to be the '\' character that is causing the problem.  Does anyone have an idea
what is going on here?
