I wholeheartedly agree with Joe's comments. If the various groups
who needed continued support of gcc-2.95 branch had responded to Jeff's
request for a maintainer and provided the resources, the community could
have had continued support. If the various groups (e.g., GNU/Linux and
BSD distributors) who needed an interim release of gcc with the new
features had approached the GCC Steering Committee and provided the
resources, the community could have had an interim release for everyone to
use.
The GCC Steering Committee would make every effort to respond to
the needs of the Open Source communittee if the request were made and the
resources were available. With the limited volunteer effort, the Steering
Committee needs to set priorities.
The best way to avoid these problems is for the interested parties
(especially the commercial ones who can provide resources to projects they
need) to engage the community to solve these problems instead of creating
private solutions at greater expense.
