CC/GCC into PATH variable

I have a full distribution and updates to full distribution but when I
configure it bombs out,
question:

How do I set the PATH variable for cc or gcc?
I have the gcc-2.95.2 source in /usr/local, should create the _objdir_
there as well?
Configure also displays:
/usr/ucb/cc: language optional software package not installed.
I'm using x86 Solaris 8, what am I doing wrong?
