Do I have a bad version of gcc?

Yes, I know.  The answer is no, it is not bad.  That is the compiler
your vendor recommends and uses.  It contains many advancements over
the FSF's 2.95.2 compiler.  It just doesn't happen to be the current
FSF released compiler.  The current FSF compiler is gcc 2.95.2.

It should work fine.  If you wanted to, you could grab gcc 2.95.2 and
use it.
