GDB 5?

Just to clarify a little bit of history.
GDB 5 was in many ways a marketing exercise.
The process was kicked off just two days after the fully open CVS
repository went live (the branch didn't occur for another couple of
months :-). The emphasis wasn't on new features but rather on getting
something reasonably stable out the door. The intention was, in part,
to celebrate/promote the renewal of GDB as a free source development.
In '98/'99 Cygnus (Now Red Hat) started several major (and still
ongoing) projects to do with GDB (multi-arch, event loop, MI). While
these projects were discussed widely and publicly, the initial coding
effort was unfortunately not public. However, consistent with GDB
policy, all changes were submitted to the GDB-patches list for review
before being included in the official GDB sources.
Anyway, looking back, the move to an open repository was a resounding
success.
Of course, your memory of history may vary :-)
