size of cdata types

Hi,
   Could you tell me, are there any other places where
gcc picks up the size of data types apart from the
macros (like INT_TYPE_SIZE etc.,)  in tm.h file ??

  If not, even after changing the size of int to 16
 on a pdp11 port, the integer operations are being
 mapped to SImode . Why is it so ??
