Installation problem on GCC

I'm trying to install GCC on a Digital Unix 4.0F. I follow the instruction 
in index.html and sucessfully configure and make the program. But when I 
type "make install" or "make install LANGUAGES="c c++
", I got the following msg:
Object file format error in: scan-decls.o: local_is_complete: iaux(402) > 
iauxMax(6) for obj scan-decls.o
*** Exit 1
Stop.
*** Exit 1
Stop.
Could you tell me what's the problem?
